"Field" by Richard Box.
This installation uses 1301 fluorescent tubes planted in a field underneath high voltage power lines. The voltage potential of ground is zero volts, therefore the buried ends of the fluorescent tubes will also have a voltage potential of zero volts because of being in direct contact with the ground. The exposed end of the tubes however, are charged by the electromagnetic field (EMF) emanating from the powerlines (which usually carry hundreds of thousands of volts).
The voltage differential across the tubes causes them to light up as if they were plugged into an electrical outlet! (Read more)
